Tarakan Street shortlisted in two categories at the 2024 AIA Victorian Architecture Awards

Tarakan Street Social and Affordable housing has been shortlisted in both the Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing AND the Urban Design categories at the 2024 AIA Victorian Architecture Awards.

130 tenure-blind social and affordable homes are spread across three buildings which appeal to the scale of their suburban context. The buildings are arranged to prioritise views and access to green open spaces. The landscaped areas provide varying degrees of ‘publicness’, with semi-private resident community gardens and small public parks, and playground and barbeque facilities for both residents and the local community. A new gate provides access to the adjacent primary school, encouraging locals to cut through the site. Several mature Spotted Gums which provide shade and frame the open spaces have been purposefully retained.

To ensure both privacy and outlook to ground floor apartments,  a wedge-shaped landscape berm was devised to provide a buffer between the private outdoor space and the public realm.
