A supportive culture
At NH we pride ourselves on our supportive and positive studio culture that prioritises true collaboration and creative involvement from the whole team. We know that our strongest asset are our people, and we are committed to supporting our team by investing in their development and supporting their wellbeing at work.
A creative studio environment
Our studio is a friendly place, where contributions from everyone are valued. We all sit together in an open plan space with plenty of break-out areas to spread out the yellow trace.
Our studio social calendar is vibrant, with drinks on Friday evenings, regular excursions out to site and a soccer team, if that’s your jam. We promote and support the wellbeing of our team through our free and confidential EAP service. And our Flinders Lane studio is equipped with bicycle storage and end of trip facilities.
Flexible support for parents and carers
We value contributions from a diverse team of people at NH and understand that supporting our team to care for their families through parental leave and flexible working arrangements helps maintain this diversity. We’ve recently updated our parental leave policy to reflect this commitment.
We encourage the cross-pollination of design ideas and knowledge through our weekly morning teas and in-house ‘Text Talks’ where we discuss issues influencing contemporary design ideas and culture.
A place to grow
We provide opportunities for ongoing professional development through regular check-ins and both formal and informal mentoring. We make sure our graduates and early career architects get the breadth of experience they need to develop their skills through our graduate program.
We also support our team through opportunities for training, CPD and registration support.
Hear from our Team
Lucinda Arundel, Principal
“There is a strong culture of respect, support and generally of ‘being on the same team’ at NH. Communication and engagement from everyone are encouraged which fosters a democratic team environment.
We have a broad church of sectors which we work in and with each project we apply a methodology of enquiry which embraces an approach where the specifics of site, client and programme shape the unique design outcomes.”
Chloe Mikronis, Senior Associate
“I’ve also felt really supported both in the lead up to and during my maternity leave. Being a first-time mum, it’s been such a relief to know I have a team who support me entirely on this journey. They’ve encouraged me to stay in touch as much as I’d like and kept me updated on various events and gatherings, some of which I’ve happily attended to stay connected and across the office news.”
Victor Wong, Senior Associate
“I was really surprised when, on my first day, one of the directors came up to me and introduced himself. But that’s what it’s like here. It feels like a small studio with a lot of people, rather than a large company with over 80 staff.”
Luis Sorrentino, Senior Associate
“When I was going for my registration some of the team helped me prepare by doing practice interviews with me at lunch.
NH isn’t a competitive culture like a lot of other places. There’s a sense that if you want to progress career wise, NH will support you to work towards it.”
Grace McKeller, Senior Associate
“People are generous with their time here if you need guidance or to have a chat about a project, that’s part of the culture.
Friends are always surprised when I say I know everyone at the studio because of the size of NH, but we have a lot of opportunities to get to know each other. We have morning teas every Wednesday, Friday drinks and plenty of other ways to get involved socially.”
Jan Vastesaeger, Principal
“There’s an exceptional mix of project types and sizes in the work we do at NH.
Every project is seen as an opportunity to explore the outcome and process without a predefined solution. NH is unpretentious in that way. The culture is one that values and supports the breath of skills available across the whole team.“
Laura Courtney, Associate
“I’ve spent much of the past two years working on our Tarakan Street Social and Affordable Housing Project. It has been a real aspiration of mine to be able to work on a project which designs safe and comfortable homes for those who need them.
The work we do contributes to the wider community. From social and affordable housing to student precincts to work in the public health sector, we are working on projects to improve our city.”
Tiffany Tan, Principal
“Our work at NH draws on returning to first principles of good building design. We work across an ambitious and wide-ranging variety of sectors and at varying scales.
As a team, we’re genuinely interested in designing for people and contributing to the community, which aligns with my personal values.”
