Sydney Fish Market

The Sydney Fish Market has become a gateway location for international visitors to experience fresh local produce. The purpose of the framework was to coordinate and inform the urban design context for future detailed design responses. It was produced through comprehensive analysis of the site, market operations, feasibility options, context and extensive stakeholder consultation.

This research determined that the priorities for the site were: increased public access to the waterfront; a new Bays Market precinct incorporating a rejuvenated Sydney Fish Market with a new market food offering and dining; compatible new housing options; improved transport access; a seamless integration of Wentworth Park with the Bays Market District and the surrounding precinct and improved sport and recreation facilities, community space and public amenity.

The Bays Market District Urban Design Framework was presented to UrbanGrowth NSW in March 2016. The reference design and framework together have provided the basis for new development of the site announced in July 2017.
