Saltwater Coast

The brief for this project was to design a lifestyle centre to act as a meeting place for residents within the Saltwater Coast residential development at Point Cook which will accommodate approximately 4,000 residents. Saltwater Lifestyle Centre encourages a sense of community and ownership whilst boasting a careful reinterpretation of a sensitive local ecology, home to significant bird life.

The timber-clad structure stands as a bold silhouette against the residential surroundings, individual and striking in its form.

This residents-only community centre offers many recreational facilities in spaces with a resort-style feel. The facilities incorporated in the hub include a gym, lap pool, recreational pool, children’s pool, spa, tennis courts, a cafe, and a multi-purpose function space.

NH Architecture has successfully provided the local community with a high quality, uniquely designed lifestyle centre, delivered within a robust commercial environment, and setting a benchmark for Point Cook and the surrounding area.

Spotted gum panelling was selected for both its durability in coastal weather and its rich bronze tone. Becoming a warm, earthy grey over time, it is analogous with the drift wood of neighbouring beaches.

Saltwater Coast is positioned within the heart of the suburban community. As a juxtaposition to the largely brick dominated surrounding area, we opted for native spotted gum timber panelling on the exterior, contrasting the sandy stone colour palette of the residential surroundings, as well as marking a reflection of civic pride.

The monolithic façade is cut to create apertures for strategic viewing of adjacent parkland and the city on the horizon. The sinuous, weaving form of the building emulates and responds to the surrounding views and wider context.
