NH and Guled Elyas collaborate on ‘Personal but Not Private’ for Melbourne Design Week

We’re excited to present an exhibition as part of this year’s Melbourne Design Week program with artist Guled Elyas at the RMIT Design Hub.

Examining the myriad perceptions and experiences of Melbourne’s public housing estates, ‘Personal but Not Private’ builds on the artist’s long-term fascination with documenting the architecture of the buildings.

“While home is deeply personal, housing is a public matter. While stigma is cast upon the estates, diverse communities and identities are nurtured within them. Where a bunch of pipes and signage might be seen as ugly to some, in another’s eyes, they are a source of delight.”

In this collaborative installation, new video works by Elyas are projected onto what appears to be a larger-than-life curtained window. The projections are presented alongside architectural scale models and a soundscape of field recordings and ambient sounds. Through these multidisciplinary studies of Melbourne’s public housing estates, the team are hoping to inspire discussion and commentary on the future of social housing.

‘Personal but Not Private’ is open weekdays from Thursday the 18th of May until Friday the 26th of May from 9:00am until 6:00pm at the RMIT Design Hub level 3 entry foyer, corner Victoria and Swanston Streets, Carlton.

See the program listing at designweek.melbourne for the full venue and accessibility information.

This event is part of Melbourne Design Week 2023, an initiative of the Victorian Government in collaboration with the NGV and is supported by RMIT Culture.
